Thursday 19th April - walk ***** Bawdsey to East Lane - sunny, still and very hot.

Top night in one of the best wild camping spots in Suffolk and woke to another sunny, still and hot day with the River Deben like a mill pool! Relaxing morning enjoying the beautiful scenery, watching the river action and even managed to do my exercises on a small secluded beach at the end of the row of concrete anti-tank fortifications from the Second World War when Bawdsey was a base used to develop radar. Then Mag packed a sandwich and we set off for a walk at 12.30. Heading along the beach past the quay around the corner to the impressive manor formally a private school but now a PGL activity centre. The tide was high so we had to walk along the piled section of footpath then scramble down onto the shingle beach. There is a tall cliff to the left and mirror flat sea to the right you couldn’t get a better day even in summer and the temperature is way above normal! This is the perfect spot for beachcombing as its little used and all sorts wash up here including amber and sharks teeth which unfortunately we didn’t find today:( We collected a few kilos of coal, Mag got some nice shells and someone had been decorating the bushes with large whelk shells with holes in them – like xmas decorations! so we added to them:) There are loads of old groynes in various statws of disrepair which are ideal for taking pics of with their large rusty bolts and we found the perfect spot for our picnic lunch leaning against one. We wished we had brought our books to read but enjoyed a delicious chicken sandwich while looking at the boats and birds out to sea, we even saw a large seal. I probably sat too long in the sun here and have ended up with a bit of a red chest, that will teach me to put the sun cream on! Refreshed we continued on past the old pile boxes that have fallen down the cliff into the sea to East Lane Martello Tower where we stop for desert, half a banana each! There are no footpaths back from here so you have to follow the road which is a long way with tired legs, about two miles! It is a pretty way though. passing fields of turf with one being cut by the biggest tractor towed lawn mower we have ever seen!! Also a huge 14 window farm house complete with pond. Continuing by the site of the windfarm electric cable, stopping to take some pics of a beautiful tree covered with pussy willow. The River Deben didn’t seem to be getting any closer but when we reached the field of yellow rape, always pretty as a picture, we knew we were nearly back to the van. We arrived knackered as usual after covering over 5 miles being out 4 hours, top walk. It was great to relax over a well-deserved cuppa watching the kids play in the mud while others barbequed. Again, we were treated to the most amazing sunset which is always good here, then in bed by ten and we didn’t read long before we were sound!
